These findings suggest that plants possess species-specific sophisticated VOC recognition systems in addition to a mechanism capable of recognizing structural differences among GLV components (such as specialized receptor proteins)12,45. Indeed, some volatile-specific receptors in plants have been isolated, including those for ethylene46 and β-caryophyllene25.
